Totnes / South Devon / England
Mixed Ultimate Frisbee / Southwest England
Torque is a reboot of TQ9ers, a historic Mixed (co-ed) Ultimate Frisbee team in Totnes with a 20-year history. Torque hopes to expand Ultimate in our corner of the southwest by combining British spirit with some tech from across the pond. Our roster includes players from all over South Devon. We are beginner-friendly, and our goal is to grow a vibrant Ultimate community in Totnes, South Devon, and their surrounding areas.
Where We Train
We play Tuesdays afternoons from 6-8pm, next to the hockey turf pitch opposite the King Edward VI Community College campus (KEVICC). We play outdoor when the light allows (Mar-Oct). In the winter, we move indoors to a hall in the college, from 8-9:30pm. We're just a quick walk from the Totnes train station, and a stone's throw from the River Dart, which has a beautiful wild swimming spot after an afternoon of training!

What's Next?
Our next event is the friendly on 30 Aug in Exeter at the Exwick Fields on the River Exe. Our hosts are Exeter City Ultimate, and we'll be joined by Bristol Ultimate's team BUD. For some of you, this will be your first tournament. You are expected to know the rules: WFDF Rules of Ultimate, 2025-2028.
The three most important non-obvious rules:
All contact is a FOUL--which includes putting a hand on the opponent to "feel" where they're going, leaning against the opponent, boxing out, restraining movement with outstretched arms or feet, or jumping/bidding toward the disc by going through someone or bumping them out of the way, and is expressly prohibited.
We will try to supply kit. The orders are in, so it's up to the supplier to make good. The event will run from ~10am to ~4pm, so plan appropriately, with water, food, etc. We'll have a 30 minute lunch. Skip the fish and a glass of white; I would stick with bagels and pickles and Lucozade--quick sources of carbs, salt, and sugar.
Is this "Ultimate Frisbee"?
Ultimate (formerly known as "Ultimate Frisbee") is an open-field sport, much like Association Football, Rugby, or American Football. There are 7 on a side. The field is depicted above. Games are to 15 points. Points begin with one team, standing in their endzone, "pulling" (i.e., throwing) the disc to the other team. Anyone who catches the disc cannot run with the disc (basketball travel rules), and must pass to someone else. Catching a disc in the opponent's endzone (on the opposite end of the pitch) scores a point. Ultimate is unique in that it's:
Yes, sadly, Ultimate is "Ultimate Frisbee". Except that "Frisbee" is a registered trademark of Wham-O Corporation, who made a big stink about protecting their trademark. This created a problem for our sport, so now it's just "Ultimate".
Or even more ridiculously, in some cases, it's known as the sport of "Flying Disc", and "Ultimate" is a discipline within it. Somehow they took a silly name and make it utterly absurd. Looking at you, World Games. Ultimate suffers from having a pretty silly name. At least we've dropped the trademarked bit.
"Nothing can beat a whole weekend of Ultimate Frisbee."
Exeter, 30 Aug 2025
A 3-team friendly hosted by Exeter Club Ultimate on their riverside fields. A nice tune-up after the tour season, to prep for Glastonbury, and to help developing teams gently introduce players to our wonderful sport.
Glastonbury, 12-14 September 2025
Glastonbury is a wonderful Mixed tournament to cap off the summer outdoor season. This is their 25th anniversary event, and we were lucky enough to get a spot! We will combine teams with friends from Exeter for a good time!
Bristol, 27 September 2025
Bristol Ultimate Development is a team composed of players which are relatively new to the sport. To celebrate 10 years of brilliant outreach, they are putting on an indoor invitational, to which we've been invited!
"My biggest regrets are the bids I never took."
